First Corinthians 11:23-26 - June 7, 2015

What is it that we remember in taking communion?

We remember the glorious, gracious, merciful, joy-giving forgiveness that we have in Jesus Christ. We remember that Jesus Christ has given us life and hope and peace and joy. We remember that our sins have been removed from us. We remember that we are clean before the Lord.

The Old Testament saints looked at the sacrificial system and said, “This is a promise that one day we will be clean, even though we are not clean now.”

Those are alive in Jesus Christ look at the bread and wine of communion and say, “This is a reminder that the Lord has already made ME clean, already borne MY sins, already shed His blood. It is done, it is finished. Jesus died on the cross, and will NEVER die again. His work is perfectly complete, and I am perfectly forgiven.”
